White Elephant Rules (Free Printable Rules Page and Steal Tracker)
White Elephant is the open-or-steal gift exchange where the best gift in the room changes hands several times before the night is over. It's easy once everyone knows the rules, and most arguments come from rules nobody agreed on before the first gift was opened. Here is how to set it up, run it and keep it moving.
What you need
- One wrapped gift per player, with no names on the gifts.
- Numbered tickets or slips of paper, from 1 up to the number of players.
- A bowl or hat to draw from.
- A printed rules page so the host can settle questions quickly.
- Optional: a steal tracker to record who has which gift.
The classic rules, step by step
- Set the house rules. Agree on a gift budget and a steal limit before the party. Three steals per gift is the classic choice.
- Bring one wrapped gift. Each player adds one gift to the pile.
- Draw numbers. Everyone draws a ticket. That's the turn order.
- Player 1 opens. The first player picks any wrapped gift and opens it so everyone can see.
- Open or steal. On each turn after that, a player either opens a new wrapped gift or steals any opened gift that isn't frozen.
- Robbed? Go again. If your gift is stolen, you open a new gift or steal a different one. You can't steal back the gift that was just taken from you. The turn ends when someone opens a new gift.
- Frozen gifts. Once a gift hits the steal limit, it's frozen and stays with whoever holds it.
Many groups give Player 1 one last chance at the end to swap with any unfrozen gift, since they never got to steal. Decide before you start whether you're using that rule.
House rule options
Pick any of these and announce them before the first gift is opened:
- Two-steal max: gifts freeze after the second steal. This keeps big groups moving.
- One steal per turn: a gift can't be stolen twice in the same turn.
- Speed round: players get 30 seconds to decide, or they must open.
- Theme swap: cozy, funny, under a set price, or homemade.
Timing and group size
Classic Steal works for roughly 6 to 40 players and usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes. The more players and steals you allow, the longer it runs. For a big office group, use the two-steal max and the speed round together. For a small family group, allow more steals, since part of the fun is the back-and-forth.
If your group is very large, consider splitting into two circles, each with its own pile of gifts. It's also much easier for everyone to see what's being opened.
Using the steal tracker
Write each gift down as it's opened, then add a name each time it's stolen. When a gift hits the steal limit, mark it frozen. The tracker settles the classic "wait, has that been stolen twice already?" debate in seconds. It's especially handy on a video call, where it's hard to keep track of who is holding what.
Hosting tips
- Send the budget and house rules with the invitation so nobody shows up with a gift far over or under the limit.
- Ask people to open gifts where everyone can see them, and to hold them up for a moment.
- Keep a spare wrapped gift or two in case someone forgets.
- If someone is clearly unhappy with their final gift, an end-of-game "trade if you both agree" round keeps it friendly.
