New Years Eve Games for Family: A Plan for the Whole Night
New Year's Eve at home with family is a long evening, and the right games keep everyone from the kids' bedtime to the countdown having fun together. The trick is a mix: quiet table games while people arrive, team quizzes once everyone's settled, something active when energy dips, and one big game right before midnight. Here's how to plan it, step by step.
Your planning timeline
- A week or two before: decide who's coming and roughly how many teams you'll have. The party score sheet tracks up to 6 teams.
- A few days before: print the file that matches your paper at Actual size / 100%. Cardstock works well for the charades cards, bingo cards and prediction cards. Print the Emoji Decoder in color if you can.
- The day before: cut apart the Resolution Charades cards, gather pens and a few envelopes for the prediction cards, and pick some small prizes (they're not included, so treats or paper crowns are fine).
- On the day: set the answer keys aside with the host so nobody peeks.
Setting up
- Clear one big table for the quizzes, and leave some open floor for charades and the scavenger hunt.
- Split into teams that mix ages. Kids can team up with an adult for the quizzes.
- Put the score sheet somewhere everyone can see it, so the race to midnight feels real.
How to run the night
- As people arrive: leave the New Year Word Scramble and Emoji Decoder on the table. Early guests can start, and late guests can join in.
- Once everyone is there: play New Year Traditions Around the World and Who Am I? New Year Edition in teams.
- Get moving: Resolution Charades, then Resolution This or That, a pick-a-side game with no wrong answers.
- Energy boost: send teams off on the Midnight Scavenger Hunt to collect points.
- Grown-up favorites: 2026 Year-in-Review Trivia and Finish the Line, which uses lines from "Auld Lang Syne" and "Ring Out, Wild Bells".
- Before midnight: fill in the 2027 Predictions Cards, seal them in envelopes and save them to open next New Year's Eve.
- The big finish: play New Year's Eve Bingo with the caller cards. Play the quizzes before Bingo, since some bingo words are also quiz answers.
Tips for a family crowd
- Early countdown for little ones. Hold a pretend midnight earlier in the evening for kids who won't make it, then keep the real one for later.
- Rotate the reader. Let a different family member read the questions each round.
- Keep scores light. Give points for the funniest charades too, not just right answers.
- Relatives far away? Share your screen on a video call and read the questions aloud.
- Toast with what everyone can drink, like sparkling cider for the kids.
Once the kids are asleep, grown-ups who want more can try a Roaring Twenties whodunit: see our New Year's Eve murder mystery game page (best for adults).
