Christmas Party Games for Adults (Easy to Host, Free Printable)
Grown-up holiday parties don't need elaborate games. They need a few easy ones that get people laughing, mixing and talking, with clear rules and a host who keeps things moving. Here's how to choose and run Christmas party games for adults at home, at a friends' get-together or on a video call.
Choose a mix of game types
The best evenings mix a few kinds of games so different personalities all get a moment:
- Talking games like pick-a-side questions. Low effort, big conversations, good for the start of the night.
- Brain games like trivia, word scrambles or categories. Great in teams, with a little friendly competition.
- Moving games like charades or a mingle bingo. Use them when energy drops after dinner.
- A gift swap as the finale, if your group is exchanging presents.
How to run Holiday Pick-a-Side
- Print one copy for the host. Guests don't need their own sheets.
- Read a question aloud, for example "Have snow every day of December or never see snow at all?"
- Have everyone choose. Either go around the room, or have people move to the left side of the room for the first option and the right side for the second.
- Ask a couple of people to explain their pick. That's where the best stories come from.
- Optional scoring: give a point to anyone who sides with the majority, and keep a running tally on paper.
It works with almost any group size. With a small group, everyone explains their answer. With a large group, ask two or three people per question and keep it moving. Plan on roughly 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many questions you use and how much people talk.
A sample game plan for a two-hour party
- Arrivals: leave out a mingle game or a printed quiz people can start on while they get drinks.
- Once everyone is there: a round of Pick-a-Side to warm up the room.
- After food: a team game such as trivia or a word scramble. Split into teams of three to six.
- Energy boost: charades or a quick speed round.
- Finale: a gift swap, then announce the winners and hand out small prizes.
You don't need to fill every minute. Two or three games with plenty of time to chat in between is usually just right.
Hosting tips
- Print ahead. Print sheets the day before and keep pens in a jar on each table.
- Use teams. Teams make quieter guests more comfortable and keep scores close.
- Set a timer. A phone timer keeps rounds short and stops one game from taking over the night.
- Keep the answer key face down. If a game has answers, the host holds them until scoring time.
- Video call parties: email the PDFs in advance, share your screen for read-aloud games, and use breakout rooms for team rounds.
Keep it fun for everyone
Adult parties often mix close friends, partners and people meeting for the first time. Pick questions and prompts that anyone can answer without sharing something private, and let people pass if they want. Not everyone drinks, so don't make drinking part of any rule. Keep prizes small and lighthearted, and celebrate the funniest answer as loudly as the winning score. Guests remember a host who made them feel included far longer than they remember who won.
